Please clarify.  Above, you said, this did not work.  When you have
the "timed out" problem, does "cardctl eject" followed by "cardctl
insert" work (i.e. give you a functioning card) or not?

I can't parse this sentence... the "timed out" error is something that
happens at card detection time, and has no connection to when or if
you run "cardctl ident".  Though, "cardctl ident" should fail if you
got the "timed out" error.
