   In my case it is a third-party application that
relies on usermod utility to manage groups and users,
so I really need usermod to do its job. I will ask the
vendor to switch to gpasswd, but I think that it makes
sense to report the problem here also.

   If it cannot be fixed I would prefer usermod's -G
option to go away completely because in addition to
the NIS problem it also requires sysadmin to specify a
full list of groups in which user participates.
