But it does not introduces importand changes :)
All this modifications was added during general code review/cleanups.

Yes. The same as rewrite for use getopt_long() too :)
After this groupmems can be moved to src/Makefile.am::ubin_PROGRAMS.

BTW: I can't recall is groupmems was submitted for include under the 
same license as rest shadow or not ? (shadow is BSD).
