Your compiler is broken. I won't even pretend to know where the exact
breakage is; you'll have to resolve that one with the maintainer.

That said, the recommended compiler, for both kernel and userspace,
is the uClibc one: http://uclibc.org/toolchains.html

Although building from source is recommended, a pre-built one is also
available: http://gc-linux.org/down/ppc-linux-uclibc-toolchain.tar.bz2
with the only bonus being it comes with a cross-debugger for those who
might find it of use. (hint: buildroot)

Consequently, the top-level Makefile in CVS is now gone as it's
clearly toolchain biased. You'll now have to do something like:

  $ export ARCH=ppc CROSS_COMPILE=$my-powerpc-toolchain-
  $ make

or:

  $ make ARCH=ppc CROSS_COMPILE=$my-powerpc-toolchain-

or just edit the Makefile to match your setup.
