Turned out not to be that; all my headers were installed as I  
thought, but compiler.h was actually tucked away in /usr/src/linux  
and my build environment wasn't picking it up for some reason.   
Sorted now, thanks.

Sadly all a bit academic until the unresolved symbol problem is fixed  
though :/
