For what it's worth, I successfully compiled and booted an sh4 kernel with (IIRC) gcc-3.3.1 and crosstool (that was before gcc-3.3.2 came out). Kaz helped me figure out the compiler options and patches needed, and I carry the patches forward in newer versions of http://kegel.com/crosstool.
