Greetings to all. I opened an old D-Link DI-713P router today. It has four ethernet ports, two wireless antennae, a parallel port, and a serial port on the back, but what I found inside was truly astonishing--and could make it a perfect ELKS device! The wireless interface is a wireless PCMCIA card in an internal PC card slot. The ethernet ports seem to be powered by two Realtek RTL8019AS ISA ethernet chips, and best of all, the CPU is an embedded AMD Am186-ED-40KC, an 80186 CPU, attached to 512K of RAM and a 512K ROM! This is a very exciting piece of hardware. The PCMCIA port could easily provide a way to connect USB ports or storage devices. It doesn't have much memory, but it would surely be easy to write the software for. RTL8019 chip data is quite easy to find, too. If you can find one of these old routers, it may make for good times. Even if you don't care about the hardware itself, the wireless PCMCIA card inside has two tiny antenna sockets...so if you need a wardriving card that can take an external antenna, that may be the thing to get.
