Ok... I could not wait further, and I was prepared so unsolder the tsop of 
the dead box anyway.... so here's the answer.
It works. 2.31 is ok for this very new box (which is not that new being a 
1.4/1.5) and yes... I programmed the binary taken from the cronwell boot cd 
w/o mods.
