I unsoldered the bios on the dead xbox and reprogrammed cromwell with a 
normal flash programmer. I have this stuff at work. The programmer is a 
little expensive for home use tough... and requires extra adapters for tsop 
(expensive too).

Unfortunately, when soldered back on the mobo I won't boot yet. I will have 
to check if I soldered it properly, but for now, the other xbox was 
successfully flashed with cromwell 2.31 and I'm in the process of 
recompiling a kernel with the patches I need ;-)

Before I go digging in the sources of raincoat, is there anything that 
raincoat does to the original binary file when programming it on the flash 
(i.e. do I have to modify the binary when programming with external 
programmer other than raincoat)?
