Lost files on fatx

Hi,

    When i renamed a directory from Axxxbxxx to AxxxBxxx , the directory 
disappeared !  When i tried to mkdir a directory with the same name , i was 
informed that a directory with the same name exists. Is this a known bug , i 
cant find any information on it. Is there also any way to recover the files. 
Im using Gentoox.
