Cromwell patches for FreeBSD support

Hello everyone,

Over the past week, I have been working to get FreeBSD working on an
XBox. This has been successful, and it works like a charm [1]. Patches
will be released tomorrow, for 5.4-RELEASE and hopefully 6.0-BETA, along
with dmesg(8) output and such.

However, in order to successfully boot FreeBSD using Cromwell (the XBox
I used for the project had a Cromwell BIOS), severnal modifications were
required so Cromwell would accept the FreeBSD kernel and successfully
boot it. With these patches, Cromwell can successfully etherboot a FreeBSD
kernel, as well as load one from CD-ROM. Loading from harddisk hasn't been
tried yet. These modifications can be found at

A very small patch was also needed to be able to build Cromwell on a
FreeBSD machine, this patch can be found at

I hope these patches will make it to the official Cromwell tree, and I
would really like to see an official release soon that integrates them.
They were made against the CVS version.

Finally, I would like to thank Ed Schouten for providing me with his
XBox to develop everything on, as well as reviewing my patches and
providing me with details to make this all work.

[1] The framebuffer is fully supported, same goes for sound and USB
    devices (such as an USB keyboard for the console). Only ethernet
    is missing, currently, as FreeBSD lacks support for it. The binary
    only driver in /usr/ports/net/nvnet fails with an error 5, for some
    reason.
