If it is not possible to switch the fan off, may be it's possible to put the CPU in a low consomation state that could allow turning the fan off. The ACPI standard allows reducing CPU frequency...

Note that I know I could say dummy things because I'm only discovering PC hardware, just don't be too impatient with me ;)
