I built a little GUI installer a while back using Qt/Embedded, which supported an option telling it that while the fb resolution was 640x480, it should only use say, 580x420. It worked fine. I really don't know if X supports this though, though there is no technical reason I can see that you can't do it. You basically want to say "Set the res to X x X, but only use the innermost Y x Y pixels". I seem to recall the people fiddling with the hdtv side use 'dead pixels' to adjust this, but unfortunately, I'm not knowledgeable enough about X to be able to say. David
