Entering in S3 in my desktop doesn't work

Hello,

I'm trying to entern into ACPI S3 state in my Intel Celeron, chipset ICH4. 
I'm using the kernel 2.4.20 with the last patch for ACPI, and I'm tryibg the 
following:

   echo 3 > /proc/acpi/sleep

Nothing happens !, what's its wrong ?
