Backlight and Modem Connection trouble

Hi,
	I have a strange problem with my laptop. The modem drops
connection when I close the lid of the laptop. pppd and wvdial keep
running as if nothing has happened. However the communication stops.
pinging of IP addresses or domain names doesn't return packets. I get
packet loss errors. I have to kill wvdial with ctrl-c and then reconnect.
	I think this has something to do with ACPI/Power Management.
I have tried acpi=off in my kernel command line with no success.
	The same thing happens when I switch from any virtual console to
X. The screen blanks (backlight turns off) for a second before X is
displayed and then modem communication stops. I have not configured
anything on my lid close event. I think the backlight is being turned off
automatically by BIOS. I have Phoenix BIOS in my laptop. Don't know why
turning off backlight disrupts modem communication. The laptop doesn't
enter the suspend state when I close the lid. So modem communication
should not stop.
	Please help. Will be most happy to send any configurations file /
output of any command to help debug this problem.



Following is my setup:
	Toshiba Satellite M30-742 laptop.
	Phoenix BIOS.
	Fedora Core 2 installation (with kernel upgraded to 2.6.11).
	nVidia drivers for X.
	slmodem 2.9.9b package for running my internal modem.
