How I installed a HP psc 1110 on Pink Tie Linux 10 (2.4.21-4.EL)
(Please note when installing I chose custom and selected all the
Kernel development stuff to be installed, I believe I tried it
without first and it didn't work, mind you it was 3am!)

However in Gimp I have yet to get it to print.. if anyone knows the setup how
I'd be delighted to know what I'm missing.

############################

Here was the solution that worked for me for printing (except direct from
Gimp) and Scanning (works in Gimp), after a fresh install with kernel
development options on custom install.

Logged in as root and
at the terminal prompt

[root] # mkdir /root/printdownload

Used Mozilla to download :
Downloaded redhat-config-printer-0.6.47.11-1.i386.rpm and saved into
/root/printdownload
Downloaded redhat-config-printer-gui-0.6.47.11-1.i386.rpm and saved into
/root/printdownload
Downloaded hpoj-0.91.tgz and saved into /root/printdownload

Back at the terminal prompt
[root] # cd /root/printdownload
[root] # tar -xzf hpoj-0.91.tgz
[root] # cd hpoj-0.91.tgz
[root] # vi /etc/sysconfig/i18n

--> this puts you into the vi editor, use the arrow keys to move along to the
.UTF-8
initially my first line said
LANG="en_GB.UTF-8"
using the delete key remove .UTF-8 to be left with
LANG="en_GB"
press :w to write the file
press :q to quit

[root] # ./configure
[root] # make
[root] # make install
[root] # ptal-init setup

Type n to stop it scanning the parallel ports (unless you have other printers
attached)
Type y to allow it to scan the USB ports
it will pop up saying it has found the printer and
it will set it most likely to mlc:usb:psc_1100_series
Press enter to accept this
Press enter to skip the Jet Direct scan (unless you need to do this)
It will then say that the mlc:usb:psc_1100_series has been accepted as the
default printer
Press Enter to accept it
Now do
[root] # rpm -i --force redhat-config-printer-0.6.47.11-1.i386.rpm
[root] # rpm -i --force redhat-config-printer-gui-0.6.47.11-1.i386.rpm
[root] # redhat-config-printer-gui

This will take you into the printer config program
Choose New , Forward, Give your printer a name eg. HP1110
Describe it to if you want.
Click Forward, Highlight ptal:/mls:usb:psc_1100_series Hewlett-Packard psc 1100
series
Click Forward, Choose Manufacturer HP from the drop down
Choose Deskjet 3320 from the list
Click Forward, Click Apply, Click Yes to the test page
And a test page should print
Scanning should also now work, in Gimp etc.
