CUPS 1.2.0 and lpr replacement?

In Ubuntu 5.10 (and other distros with pre-1.2.0 CUPS), the Samsung binary
driver would replace lpr (and get rid of lpr.cups) with a link to "slpr"-- a
Samsung "helper" which would offer n-up options, paper options, copies, etc. 
specific to the Samsung printer.

Since updating to Ubuntu 6.06, I still have the slpr link (after re-running the
install) and running lpr (or slpr) shows me the Samsung dialog.  However, any
application that supports printing (I'm assuming via cups or gnomeprint or
somesuch API) that doesn't give you a direct command line--prints, but doesn't
show me the Samsung dialog.  So, somehow print jobs are being submitted
directly to CUPS without exec'ing the lpr command is all I can guess.  It may
have nothing to do with changes in CUPS 1.2.0.. I don't have the time to
investigate what API firefox uses to print, or OpenOffice, or any other number
of GUI apps which all now show this behavior.. so, I assume it is either cups
or gnomeprint or whatever API interface that used to use "lpr" under the covers
no longer does.

If anyone who has more knowledge of how the underlying print subsystem gets
jobs from various well-known apps to CUPS in Ubuntu 6.06 and how I can get them
using lpr (or even slpr) again.. I'd like that.  Of course, printing works
fine, but it just doesn't give me the option to change settings before the job
goes direct to the printer.
