I think you should rather talk to your Debian packager of the cupsys-*
packages then. Something with your CUPS package upgrade went haywire in 
your case.

Maybe; but that configuration obviously was...

  ...either changed by your Debian Etch upgrade process to make it
     unusable,
  ...or you specifically answered "keep it" when asked, and now it 
     does not work with your new version of CUPS.

I can not see any fault of CUPS or Linuxprinting/Foomatic so far.

A good starting point would be to give a good enough overview over
the steps you took to run into the problem. But so far you did not
even bother to tell which versions of Debian packages for CUPS, 
Ghostscript, etc. and the PPD you use....
