[Printing-user-general] Better understanding of 4-up printing

 
Hi everyone, 
 
   I finally got 4-up printing to work but came across numerous issues. 
 
1) OpenOffice.org writer does support 4-up. Via File->Page Preview, Page 
options button (with hand), 2 rows, 2 columns, then "Print page view" button 
(button to left of "Page options". 
 
2) xpdf will print 4-up printing if one replaces "lpr" with "psnup -4 | lpr". 
 
3) Nothing else really supports 4-up printing. Is this true for all printers or 
just HP printers?  
 
4) The "Queue Options" tab does allow the number-up=4 option to be set but this 
is not used. Setting the banner page meanwhile will be used. E.g. kghostview 
will lead to an egg-cups crash on printing 4-up. the banner will be printed. 
Other apps such as OpenOffice print 1-up even when sent to the printer setup 
with number-up=4. As if the option is ignored.? 
 
   Could someone help me understand where n-up should definitely be supported? 
That is, clearly each app can implement its own version. Or each printer driver 
could implement it. But can the system be setup to do it as with psnup or 
mpage? Would this be a setting to CUPS? And, if so, should the option be 
exposed to the application under printer "Properties" when printing? Or under 
"options"? Some users say they add a 1-up, 2-up, and a 4-up printer and this 
does work for them. It does not work with the hplip driver so maybe I'll go 
back to hpjis.
