[Printing-user-general] RAW printing screws up printer

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I don't know enough to have been 
able to sort it out after going through various man pages, the CUPS 
documentation and the general archives.

The raw print command     lp -o raw <filename>        prints out OK on a 
local printer, but after that I can't print normally from any program, 
say OpenOffice or kate, using that printer (or any other on my network). 
CUPS shows "printing" on the printer while the printer itself stays 
completely idle. Getting it working again is a real pain.

'Beh' (the Backend Error Handler) looks as if it is meant to deal with 
this sort of problem, but since I don't understand where the problem 
comes from, I'm unsure which printer queue 'beh' ought to be attached 
to: is it the raw queue? would that stop the freezing of the normal queue?
is it the normal queue? what would be reasonable values for the options? 
if that causes the job to be discarded, how does one re-establish normal 
behaviour?

Or am I misunderstanding completely?

Any advice would be most welcome.

I'm using CUPS-1.1.23 (-11.2.102mdk version) on Mandrake 10.2 (LE2005) 
with Linux 2.6.11-13smp kernel.
