[Printing-user-general] Help getting gs / lpr working again

Hey folks, I can use a little help getting my print system back in order. It's got to be
something simple (I suspect page resolution) but nobody seems to know what's wrong!

I have an HP LaserJet 4M+ connected to my parallel port, used it for years, everything's
been great. Then I upgraded Debian from 3.0 to 3.1 and in the process something very wrong
has happened to the print system. The upgrade had installed Xprint (which I've since
removed, thinking it was the problem) but not CUPS. I don't think I need anything fancy
since I just sent PostScript the printer via lpr.

But now what happens is that the top of the page is cut off. This happens even when I
create a PostScript file with gs!

In the past, I was able to convert PPM files like this:

convert a.ppm a.ps

But now when I do that, the resultant file is missing about 1/3 of the page at the top!
(In gv, the papersize is set to auto and it defaults to "BBox" ... the entire page of the
document does display, but it's huge and when I change the paper type to "letter" the top
half is cut out again.

The upgrade changed my GhostScript to version 8.01 (the gs-gpl package) and I think that's
got something to do with it but haven't found the proper config. This is depressing. I can
really use some help!
