communication protocol for serial Casio label printer

I have a Casio KL-8100, which I would love to get to work under Linux. 
Unfortunately, I have not been able to get any information from Casio about the
serial protocol they use.  I have tried using the pegg stuff (designed for the
USB printers) for hints with no luck so far.   Any hints or suggestions would
be appreciated - do I need something special in configuring the serial port? 
It doesn't sound like it from the manual, but I can't easily test, since their
Windows software doesn't work under Wine - it probably goes after the serial
port at too low a level.
