It would be useful to know:

- What driver you are using with the printer?
- What version of CUPS comes with your Gentoo

There have been a number of bug fixes in CUPS' support of Canon AirPrint/Mopria-compatible printers (like this one) over the last year, so it is possible you are just running into a known CUPS bug.
