How is the workflow for newer printers support?

Hi, I have a EPSON L3150 printer and installed gutenprint because I 
wanted to align heads (on linux), but it doesn't have support for the 
L3150. So, I was curious to know how is the workflow to add new printer 
driver support? The driver that I run to print is the generic ESC/P-R, 
and I noted that the printers with gunterprint drivers have native "full 
feature" linux driver. What that means? There is something that I and 
others non-experienced programmers can do for help gutenprint to 
increase printers support?
