newlib wasn't perfect?

Hi Craig,

For the past week I've been chasing a real nasty intermittent newlib bug.

I finally killed it with a 2 line change to the pids module.  But, of 
course, a single patch just wouldn't do.

So, I've include a total of 4 somewhat related patches.
