Hi Craig,

Attached are two tarballs.

For master, I resurrected one patch from that earlier misstep that has 
nothing to do with multi-threading.

For newlib, those heap based allocations weren't quite enough to avoid 
some potential future thread-unsafe outcomes.  So I've tried to address 
the remaining problem areas.
