little newlib and lotta master

Hi Craig,

Here are three minor patches for newlib but a whole bunch of patches 
(11) for the master branch.

I decided to bring the master branch top more inline with some of the 
changes made to the newlib version.  However, I've avoided any changes 
that would also impact the library.
