Working! we have a whole stack of chips pulled from various places and I was
actually using a 27256 (no 'C') - I erased and used the 27C128 chip sitting
on my desk and it worked right away, didn't even have to change it to a 16K
boot ROM.

So it seems we should avoid non-C ROMs.

But I think I tried a M27C256 and it didn't work.
So now I know it's the ROMs, not the card or motherboard.

I think you might be right... Just look at the part number. 128 divided by 8
is 16. I'd wager it's a 128 K bit chip.
To whoever was asking, try setting to 16K in the NIC setup. It should work.
