Diego,

It may be that the problem was with the Gentoo implementation of 8... 
Yesterday, I downgraded to 7.1, then upgraded to 8, and now it works.  
Nothing I did changed, but I think that something in the portage tree did.

It looks like it is resolved.  I thank you for your assistance, and the 
creation of your amazing software!
