Is there a good faq for rebuilding the PXES kernel with new modules?

I asked this awhile back and didn't really get any response, nor have I
really had a lot of luck putting anything together myself.  I'm going to
try again with 0.8 and am hoping someone can point me to some good step
by step guides for people who sorta know Linux but aren't really "Linux
guys".

The PXES image is almost perfect as is, but I'd like to add something to
do image capture from a USB camera.

From what I understand I need to make sure the kernel supports video for
linux, make sure the module for the USB camera is available to the
kernel, and the software to facilitate the image capture is installed to
the image.

I just don't quite get how to connect all the dots.  Any help would be
appreciated.  If anyone can tell me if I'm off on any of this it can
help save me a lot of time.

I think to rebuild a kernel to use, I have to add the source package,
then make config and make sure the video for linux, and the usb module,
is added.  Then I move that kernel to the PXES directory as the new
kernel for pxes.  Rerun pxesconfig and I should have a PXES image with
the new module compiled in right?

Also periodically I hear people say to "check the ram image by mounting
it first", is there a FAQ that illustrates this technique too?

I'm sure this information is out there, I just haven't found it yet.  I
can make the stock distributions work great, it's just adding this
little tweak that's got me stumped.
