Have you considered dumping your token ring and going to 100 Mbit ethernet?
If there are legacy things then a token ring/ethernet converter may help
glue it together.

Ethernet won, token ring lost (and the tolkien ring got melted :)

Yep, thought about that, but the shmfs of course is much neater. Apart from
that, there's also the issue of security - once you put stuff on a harddisk,
you have to take extra measures to protect it, it's overhead that i'd really
like to to do without.

Thanks for the suggestions - but it now seems like porting the TR driver(s)
is probably not so bad an idea after all ;-)
