Take a look at pxes.msg in ascii mode:

18 70 78 65 │ 73 32 2E 6C │ 73 73        .pxes2.lss
18 (ASCII 24) means enter graphic mode, after that show pxes.lss

From the syslinux faq: 
" Once in graphics mode, the display attributes [...] work slightly 
differently: the background color is ignored, and the foreground colors are 
the 16 colors specified in the image file. For that reason, ppmtolss16 allows 
you to specify that certain colors should be assigned to specific color 
indicies."

You must specify usable colors in your image, see the faq.
