As I understand this issue...
RDesktop will never match the native MS remote desktop client for speed.

RDP protocol sends GDI calls to the clients which correspond to 
accelrated screen draws on MS clients.
RDesktop does not handle GDI calls and therefore there is no utilisation 
of hardware acceleration even though the xdriver may support it.

Certain programs (I believe you will find) including MS Office 
applications rely on GDI when doing things like scrolling through large 
xls files or doc files with graphics embedded. RDesktop treats such 
files (all screen draws) as bitmaps.
