No. XDM is very heavy, you would be lucky to get one responsive XDM session
over a 1M link.
To connect to Linux desktops over a WAN I use VNC, it can be tuned depending
on available bandwidth.
Setting up the server is the trick.
Here is a start for you;
# cat /etc/xinetd.d/vnc-1024x768x24
service vnc-1024x768x24

Using a vncviewer you can connect to server:60 (display 60).
I only use XDM on 100Mb LAN.
I found the original VNC howto on the web somewhere a long time ago.
You could also use NX but I haven't tried that yet.
