When I designed bsp structure, I thought that bsp should include precompiled binary files against default configuration. Not only applications but also kernel and modules can also be placed in the <bspdir>/prebuilt directory. If you look at the other BSP like i386-generic or arm-Zaurus, they contain pre compiled binaries for it's default configuration. I think this is a right approach when your BSP is for your customers.
