It's possible that the freeze happens because you are in graphical mode,
not because you are using the terminal emulator. If you have integrated
graphics on your CPU, try removing your graphics card, and see if the crash
still happens (intel driver is open source, so it fairs better with various
Linux configurations, including real-time). If you don't have integrated
graphics, try to at least not use proprietary drivers.
