Can you give a try to the latest RTAI-5.1?
Recall that there is no need to stick to the kernel version of the 
distribution. Just download from www.kernel.org one having a patch in 
RTAI-5.1.
As for low cost INTEL stuff I liked the quadcore ATOM UP-BOARD 
<www.up-board.org>, which whose donated to us by an RTAI sympathetic 
user, to help checking RTAI (in idiomatic Italian they say "more unique 
than rare", nonetheless it happened).
