Thankyou for your reply Ya I have solved the problem...I recompiled the kernel and it is not detecting the network card...Thankyou very much for your help... I had a few more questions actually regarding Socket programming in Linux.. U c I m doing a thesis titled 'Real time linux optimized for wireless communciations' I have also setup a emulation network of a machine runnig RTLinux and conncected through a CISCO access point to another wirless machine. Now I wanted to know if, I can do socket programming in RTLinux. If Yes will it be real time communication? Please do answer my question and oblige. You will never see the network card under /dev, because network devices are exceptionally not handled via device files by linux. This is due the history of linux and probably also a performace issue. To get the network card running I would first try 'lspci' to scan the PCI bus for devices (look for your ethernet controller). Then do the make menuconfig again, but select all network cards you want as module. Recompile your kernel and restart the system. After reboot you can easily insert the module by calling 'insmod /lib/modules/kernel-version/drivers/net/....' or something. If you now run 'insmod eth0' and you get an output it has works, otherwise try 'dmesg' in order to get the error messages of the kernel module. If it works you can afterwards compile the right module into the kernel. I hope it works!
