Is Vmware the only idea available to avoid root access by students ?? Think over !! Hello, has anyone managed to get RTLinux run on VMWare? I tried, but failed. Every time I run scripts/insrtl, the machine crashes. Sometimes, I get some output about a kernal panic, sometimes not, but the (virtual) machine does not respond to anything but a reset (or the power switch). I always see "rtl.o will taint the license", sometimes, I see "rtl_time.o will taint the license", but not much more. I tried RTLinux-3.1 (with the 2.4.4 kernel, as well with the unsupported 2.4.18 kernel) on Debian/Woody (Stable, 3.0), Debian/Sarge (Testing, 3.1), as well as SuSE 8.0. Every time, I have the same result. Has anyone managed to successfully run RTLinux on VMWare? Why VMWare? You might argue that RTLinux and VMWare do not fit well together. I am working in the education, and we want to educate students on real-time systems. We do not want to give the studentes root access to the real machines, thus, we want to use VMWare. Furthermore, working with snapshots "just before the crash" is much easier than rebooting the machine every time. Something which might be important is that VMWare has BIOS support for multiprocessor machines, which I cannot disable. But I only have one processor, and the SMP support in the kernel is disabled, anyway. Furthermore, this version of VMWare (Workstation) would not even give the virtual machine access to the second processor. Does anyone have any hints, suggestions, experiences?
