How Did I Get a Different gcc from the rtlinux build?

I used the instructions at
<http://www.opentech.at/howtos/multiboot-howto/html/> to build rtlinux for my RHL 9
earlier this year. When I installed RHL 9, I did not ask for the kde desktop, since I
figured I'd never need it. I recently decided to install a modem on that machine and
thought I'd fire up kppp. Not there. I got out my install CD and tried to add it but
it needs gcc = 3.2.3-20 according to do the CD installation program. I used rpm/grep
to find out what gcc I have and it shows gcc-3.2.2-5. In other words, the gcc file is
now too old. How does that happen? Did the kernel build require a specific version of
gcc and so built it during the kernel build? The kde desk top has more differences
than gcc, so I do I re-install each each package it needs with rpm? If so, then I
would guess the rpm packages are on the CD and I would need to hunt them down.
