It seems that there is some experiences at

But it is also possible to customize knoppix with rtlinux as explained 
at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/aime.vareille/rtlinux/
If you have an ftp input available it is also possible to upload the 700 
MB knoppixrtlinux33.iso built on rtlinux3.2-pre3 : so the students don't 
waste too much time in installing or better could use the rtlinux 
without installing it, just booting it.
If I find time, I'll prepare similar image with RTLinux RC1, or one of 
your Student could do with the documentation so you could ftp mirror the 
resulting images.
