Cort Dougan has done a pretty nifty thing here.

 http://www.fsmlabs.com/articles/camera/rtlcam.html#more

What's interesting to me is the <rtl_posixio.h> and registering a rtl
device using the POSIX standard open(), close(), ioctl(). I've put
together most of the code he published on the site there with what I
consider to be the proper headers and so on, and it all compiles
nicely.

rtl_register_dev, the function he uses to register all the functions
with a device name, in this case "/dev/lpt0" does not seem to exsist
in RTLinux Free. At least this is what I can absorb from a google
translation of some Japanese website:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www1.linkclub.or.jp/~zhidao/zlab/computing/rtl_posixio.html&prev=/search%3Fq%3Drtl_register_dev%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3Doff

it also seems that rtl_register_rtldev, my only alternative, is on its way out?

Also, what do the arguments even mean? MAJOR seems to be some index
of an array of devices in rtl_posixio.h, I assume this is just a
device number such as in /dev/rtlf[number] and has no real relevance
but that it must be less than MAX_CHRDEV, or something similar.. (the
maximum number of character devices allowed on the system?) the other
two are pretty striagh forward, the device name and a struct
containing all the POSIX function definitions.

These are all questions which can be solved by reading the API docs.
The problem is, none of these fucntions are in the "man pages".

Where can I get more information? how are these two functions
related? How should I register a realtime device such as /dev/lpt0
(not a fifio)?

If you have any idea, even if it's not what I want, just respond.. a
relevant dialogue would be helpful enough.

Thanks,

 Evan
