module loading & fifo problems

i am getting some nasty errors with loading modules;    /tainted module 
unable to load : no liscence.    /sometimes the system hangs while i 
load modules or even configure the example files;
i have the lastest updates of woody stable and the rtlinux-3.2-pre3 
kernel release.  Another problem I have been having is I can't read or 
open the fifo files;  I receive an error message something like unable 
to open /dev/rtf0   .   maybe that is related to the first problem.  I 
don't know the last time the system worked, i inherited it from a 
previous student.
