AFAIK, SCSI should be enabled in your kernel configuration in addition to
USB...
I don't have problem with USB peripherals on RedHat 9.0 kernel > 2.4
You can check my config file if you wish:
http://leigh.twenex.org/2.4.29.config
mounting /dev/sda1 should do it.
