AMD's 48-bit addressing mode _requires_ PAE, 52-bit.  But it
doesn't take a performance hit like old PAE, 36-bit.

I think you're not setting up some things correctly. 
Although the map may use 3.5-4GiB for I/O, you should still
have 4GiB usable (even if mapped to 4.5GiB).
