Well, using Jay Estabrook's advice re "selinux=off" in the aboot command line,
I got the AC 9 distro working on my XP1000.  And found that my serial modem
has given up the ghost.  They are no longer cheap.  I got a working US
Robotics controller modem (not a winmodem) which the hardware scan recognizes
but not the dialler.  

Is there a way to force the dialler to use this device? Or are there any
internal modems that work on the late-model Alpha boxes?
