What Debian version and what sound cards?  What is your ALSA configuration? 
  They fixed some ALSA bugs a few releases ago.  What happens if you do 
"alsactl restore" manually?  Did you do "alsactl store" after making your 
changes?  It's possible that Jessie introduced a regression, but it worked 
fine on Wheezy with a single USB sound device.
