Hi!
Testdisk is good but i had no luck with my harddisk.
Photorec does not seem to recover the names of the files but i guess that is to beg for to much or?
There are other cli tools as well.
Scalpel or foremost.

It should be included on most rescue CDs, but if not, a simple "apt-get -q install testdisk" from the Ubuntu live CD should work. Your situation reminds me of the time I accidentally typed mkfs instead of fsck and had to use photorec (also part of testdisk and not limited to photos) to recover my files. What a mess!
