graphical failure fixed

The fixed was from no wisdom of mine.  I did a system upgrade a few 
minutes ago, and the son-of-a-ratball works!  I don't know if installing 
NVidia earlier helped or not.  Thunderbird and Firefox still stumble to 
life as slowly as they and other things have since last April's update, 
which I'd dared to hope would also be fixed, but I guess I'll live with 
that for the moment.
