Well, if you update the distribution then you might have problems but if you do an apt-get to update a package or even all packages you'll be fine. I'm running Vinux 5 on Ubuntu 14.04 and I update all of my packages all of the time, but I stick with Ubuntu 14.04. When I'm ready to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 or later then I'll just preserve my home directory and do a clean install.
